* Sergey Vladimirovich Ilyushin began his career as an aircraft designer for the Soviet state before World War II, with his Il-2 ground attack aircraft becoming one of the most important weapons of the Red Army during the conflict. After the war, the Ilyushin design bureau developed a series of improved aircraft, most notably airliners, that still persist in service.
